When I say camping, I am not talking about s’mores and sleeping bags. Camp was this year’s theme of the Met Gala and the best way to define the theme is simply that it is art of being extra.
On the first Monday of May, all of Hollywood’s A-Listers arrived at the steps of the Met to show off what camp means to them. Not only is this the biggest night in fashion, but it is the party of the year for anybody who is a somebody.
So What is The Met Gala?
Every year the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds a benefit to raise money for the Costume Institute. This event also involves the unveiling of the museum’s new exhibition, this year it was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”
The Met Gala is undoubtedly the biggest party of the year because of its star-studded guest list and the millions of dollars in couture and jewels that walk with them. Pictured above is Celine Dion, who wore a 22-pound dress that took 52 master embroiderers 3,000 hours to make.
How Do I get Invited?
This is the question I ask myself every year when I watch my favorite celebrities walk up those famous steps. The Met is not just about raising money for the Costume Institute, it’s about who you are and what you are wearing. Being invited to the Met Gala is not only an honor of a lifetime but a sign that you’ve made it.
No matter what you’re wearing, walking up those steps with hundreds of cameras flashing is the best publicity you can get.
Getting an invite is no easy task and its invitation only . . . but the invitation comes at a huge cost. Typically a designer or company buys a table and invites guests of their choosing. Now here’s where the price comes in. One table at the Met Gala costs anywhere from $200,000 to $300,000, and a ticket costs about $35,000.
Although, just being wealthy will not get you the invite. Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief since 1988, has the final say when it comes to the guest list. Anna individually and strategically chooses the 550 people who walk through those doors on May 1st. Anna Wintour is always right in the world of fashion.
2019: The Met GAGA
Lady Gaga has had an unbelievable year for her career and being a co-chair at the Met Gala was the cherry on top. She is the perfect example of someone who has owned the camp look since the start of her career. In 2010, Gaga wore a full meat dress to the MTV Video Music Awards and we expected nothing less.
Lady Gaga took full advantage of the paparazzi on the Met steps, making it her own fashion show. She shut down social media when she took off her extremely large pink coat, revealing a little black dress. But she didn’t stop there, underneath that black dress was two more outfits. Never before has someone at the Met Gala worn four looks in one night.
It’s almost been a week since the Met Gala and people are still buzzing about Lady Gaga. She did not come to play and made history.
